Whether they are aware of it or not, everybody who purchases or uses the internet has most likely come across a TikTok trend.

Short films shared on the social networking site since its launch in the United States over six years ago have given rise to a quickly evolving menu of fashion and culinary trends. Despite having names that can be confusing to those who are not regularly online, several of these recent fads have gone on to influence news coverage and drive sales of many products.

TikTok has become a significant cultural phenomenon, influencing trends in music, fashion and social media behavior. The following are some of the more common trends that the platform has so far generated or assisted in spreading:

Barbiecore:

Like Barbie, Barbiecore is recognized for being pink. In 2022, the color made an appearance in food, beauty, and fashion. The Associated Press even suggested it as a holiday gift that year. The fashion brand LYST claims that the trend started when images of Margot Robbie wearing pink appeared online in June 2022, one year prior to the release of the actress’s “Barbie” film, and toy manufacturer Mattel started a marketing campaign to promote the color. Barbiecore was a huge sensation on TikTok and Instagram, where the hashtag for the trend was used in over 72,000 videos.

The beachfront, white linen-clad fashion trend known as “coastal grandma” softly conveys a calm and carefree lifestyle by combining light blue and loose apparel. The term was created by Lex Nicoleta, a TikTok creator with 325,000 followers.

Cottagecore: This aesthetic draws inspiration from the hues and designs seen in rural meadows. Imagine the scenery of Middle-earth, the planet’s mythological past as portrayed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” complete with long flowery gowns and vegetation.

Mob wives: A style that combines the large (sometimes teased-out) hair, fur, and striking cheetah prints that are seen on ladies in TV series and movies with a mafia theme. Kayla Trivieri, a TikTok creator, seems to have first used the term when she uploaded a video to the app early last year that read:
“Clean girl is out, mob wife era is in.”

Office siren: Form-fitting business attire, such as pencil skirts and tight-fitting jackets. It is frequently worn with slender Bayonetta glasses, which are similar to the ones model Gisele Bündchen wore in the 2006 movie “The Devil Wears Prada” as Serena.

Y2K fashion is a catch-all word for a number of early 2000s fashions, including mesh tops, cargo pants, and baguette bags. These turn-of-the-century fashions have been revived in part by TikTok. They coincide with the so-called McBling era, which is characterized by gaudier fashions embodied by designers like Kimora Lee Simmons’ Baby Phat and Juicy Couture.

Beauty:

The clean girl aesthetic is a makeup-free style that frequently consists of glossy lips and hydrated, shining skin. Slicked-back buns and simple attire like jeans, a white t-shirt, and gold jewelry are frequently worn with it. Critics claim that Black and Hispanic populations have been adopting elements of the pattern for decades.

Makeup for cold girls: This style aims to mimic what many individuals experience when they become cold. For rosy-flushed cheeks and a nose, use red or pink blush with sheer lipstick or gloss. In 2022, Zoe Kim Kenealy, the inventor of TikTok, shared the phrase and the style.

What is the hue of a latte? Nude tones and smoky brown hues are used in this ensemble. The developer of TikTok, Rachel Rigler, came up with the word after being somewhat influenced by an Australian makeup artist named Tanielle Jai’s 2018 look.

Model and fashion icon Hailey Bieber gave the moniker “strawberry makeup” to this makeup style, which combines elements of latte makeup with an emphasis on pink and red tones. Last August, Bieber shared the look on Instagram for the first time. He then followed up with a video lesson on TikTok, where the hashtag “strawberrymakeup” is currently used in around 35,000 posts and can be download with Tiktokio.

Food:

An Italian sub sandwich with chopped meats and toppings like salami, lettuce, and banana peppers is called a chopped Italian sandwich.

Girl dinners can be anything, but they are commonly thought of as a snack plate that is easier to prepare and clean up than a regular evening meal. Olivia Maher, the developer of TikTok, is credited with coining the word.

The berry-flavored McDonald’s Grimace shake gained popularity on TikTok when several producers shared videos of themselves drinking it and then falling to the ground in a sloppy purple puddle or experiencing some other kind of eerie event. The McDonald’s fuzzy mascot-themed limited-edition purple shake increased the fast food chain’s sales in the second quarter of 2023.

A fried burger with a tortilla on top is called a smash burger taco. Tacos with hamburgers are nothing new. But when Brad Prose, the inventor of TikTok, uploaded a video about them last year, they became viral.
